Luckily, there is plenty to discover within just 3 hours of Denver. You can easily plan one-day trips to cities like Boulder, Fort Collins, Leadville, and more, where more adventure awaits you. Here is a list of places you must see, adventures you have to try, and restaurants you won’t want to miss.
Before you hit the road, make Hi Market, a convenience store and gas station, your first stop. Fill your tank or get essential items for your day trip, such as a cold drink, fresh coffee, and snacks. We have two stores in Denver, one on E Colfax Avenue and the other on Zuni Street.
1. Boulder
Boulder is 30 minutes northwest of Denver, where the Rocky Mountains meet the plains. If you come early in the morning, you can do outdoor activities like climbing and hiking. Around lunchtime, you can visit Downtown Boulder to check out its food scene. As dusk falls, walk around the Pearl Street Mall, Boulder’s heart and soul.
Step into Boulder’s past at the Museum of Boulder. The museum features incredible art shows, exhibitions, and events. Don’t miss the view of the Flatirons from the rooftop!
Wander along Boulder’s most iconic rock formations, the Flatirons. You can go hiking or rock climbing. You can also have a picnic there.
If you want to go rock climbing or hiking, visit Chautauqua Park, a National Historic Landmark. This place has lovely gardens and picnic areas as well.
Biking along the Boulder Creek Path is a great way to explore Downtown. The 5.5-mile multi-use path goes through Downtown, skirting the Main Library, Civic Area Park, and Dushanbe Teahouse.
Snooze, an A.M. Eatery is an amazing place to have breakfast. Their pancakes and eggs Benedict are just mouthwatering.
For the best omelet, eggs, bacon, and pancakes, head to The Buff Restaurant.
The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse is a Michelin Guide Recommended Restaurant. Their food, tea, and atmosphere are fantastic. The place is worth every penny.
If you want to explore the local area, walk down Pearl Street to get a glimpse of the street performers, find local art galleries, and shop to your heart’s content. If you are traveling with family, you can play games at Into the Wind.
Book lovers can’t afford to miss Boulder Book Store. Go a bit after 6 pm to catch an event. They invite authors every week!
2. Fort Collins
The natural beauty, history, and culture of Fort Collins attract many, especially for one-day trips. You can start with an activity at Mountain Whitewater before heading to the Paddler’s Pub, Odell Brewing Company, or The Silver Grill Cafe for lunch. Finally, you can end your trip with a stroll at the Historic Old Town Square.
Historic Old Town Square is the heart of Downtown Fort Collins. You will find many locally-owned stores, restaurants, galleries, and boutiques wandering the streets.
Mountain Whitewater is an incredible place to take a guided water adventure, such as rafting. It has the best guides. Later, you can play volleyball, walk the nature trail, or play yard games. You can even head to Paddler’s Pub for a beer or local wine (for 21+ only).
If you want to see the views of the city, the foothills, and Horsetooth Reservoir, hike on the Reservoir Ridge. You can easily cover the 5-mile trail in 2-3 hours.
Enjoy a drink at Odell Brewing Company (for 21+ only). Their 90 Shilling Ale is so smooth. You can even soak up the sun in their outdoor space and have mouthwatering bites from the food trucks.
Lucile’s Restaurant is a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. Their beignets are a sugary delight. Don’t miss their eggs sardou! The cozy, inviting atmosphere and the staff’s hospitality will make you feel right at home.
The Silver Grill Cafe’s famous cinnamon rolls, with a fluffy texture and sweet glaze, are a must-try.
Step back in time at Totally 80s Pizza & Museum. This one-of-a-kind spot combines a pizza restaurant with a museum dedicated to the 1980s. You can see rare 80s pop culture exhibits, such as vintage arcade games, cereal boxes, 80s music videos, and more.
Nuance Chocolate is a fun place to try some chocolates. Be sure to try their truffles and dark chocolate.
Visit the Jessup Farm Artisan Village to have a cup of coffee at Bindle Coffee, grab a bite to eat at The Loafing Shed, and do a little shopping at HEYDAY and Vortic Watches. The rustic beauty of the farm is the home of a talented group of local entrepreneurs.
3. Leadville
The former silver mining town, Leadville, is just a 1-hour and 53-minute drive from Denver. You can start your one-day trip with an outdoor activity or soak up the sun while walking in the Leadville Historic District. Head to Quincy’s Steak & Spirits or Tennessee Pass Café when hunger strikes. After this, you can go to Downtown Leadville to shop at local businesses set in original Victorian buildings.
Wander the streets of Leadville Historic District and step back into the 19th century. You will find beautifully preserved Victorian architecture, antique shops, and art galleries.
For history buffs, the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is a must. The place holds the story of 250+ men and women who found success in mining and natural resources.
Turquoise Lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and mountain views. The peaceful vibe is perfect for a picnic. You can also fish for trout or hike along its shoreline trails.
Pedal through the history of Leadville on the Mineral Belt Trail. The 11.6-mile trail winds through aspen groves, dense forests, and historic mining sites.
To see the most breathtaking views, take a drive on the Independence Pass, which runs from Twin Lakes to Aspen. It is worth the drive.
Note: You can only take a drive from Memorial Day weekend to early to mid-October. For the rest of the year, usually, the roads are closed due to snow.
The warm and rustic atmosphere at Quincy’s Steak & Spirits will make you feel right at home. Their prime rib, slow-roasted to perfection, is worth the drive.
High Mountain Pies is heaven for pizza lovers. The pizza’s crispy crust and generous toppings are satisfying. Their pie and garlic bread are delicious too.
Every foodie must visit the Treeline Kitchen. They have a great choice of meals. Their pasta is excellent.
To learn more about the city’s mining-era past, visit the beautifully preserved Temple Israel Museum, dedicated to the Jewish pioneers. Don’t skip this place if you are a history buff.
Experience the charm of the Old West in Downtown Leadville. The area has a lot of unique shops, cozy cafes, and restaurants.
4. Laramie
Experience the dusty Wild West in Laramie, only a 2-hour and 10-minute drive from Denver. The place is a goldmine for history buffs and outdoor lovers. As soon as you arrive, you can start your day trip by visiting the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site or going for an outdoor adventure.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes, such as Altitude Chophouse and Brewery, where you can get a taste of the local flavor. As dusk falls, you can either go shopping at Downtown Laramie or go to one of the local gems mentioned below.
Downtown Laramie is filled with historic buildings, locally-owned stores, cozy cafes, and iconic spots like the Buckhorn Bar.
Note: Third Street is under construction, but the sidewalks are open to the public to roam around and support the local businesses.
Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site is a beautifully preserved 1872 prison that held violent and desperate outlaws. There are many displays of cells and artifacts. Don’t miss the display of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
The University of Wyoming is home to cultural and scientific gems. The Art Museum and Geological Museum have an engaging exhibit for curious minds.
Try rock climbing at Vedauwoo. You don’t need to be an expert to give it a shot; there are many climbing areas for you to try. You can also hike the Turtle Rock Trail or bike throughout the entire Pole Mountain area.
Medicine Bow National Forest is perfect for the adventurer in you. The place has plenty of activities, including hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, ORV riding, fishing, and hunting. Whichever activity you choose, don’t miss a visit to Mirror Lake for a peaceful moment.
Saddle up to experience the beauty of the West at Vee Bar Guest Ranch. You must experience horseback riding there at least once. You can even try other activities at the ranch, such as fishing, river tubing, trap shooting, camping, herding cattle, and hayrides.

If you are looking for a laid-back place, then head to The Crowbar. The pizza is just mouthwatering.
Born in a Barn is the spot where you can find rustic charm with mouthwatering food. It has crispy, hot, and perfectly cooked chicken wings. Pair your meal with a beer (only for 21+) to make it a full meal!
If you are looking for an authentic cowboy flair, head to Cowboy Saloon & Dance Hall. This lively spot is famous for its line dancing nights and live country music.
University of Wyoming’s Archaeological Repository is a must-see place for any history enthusiast. The place has over 1 million items from at least 25,000 sites across the state.
5. Estes Park
The base camp for the Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, is the place where adventure meets small-town hospitality. The place is perfect for a one-day getaway.
You must start your visit with an activity at the Rocky Mountain National Park before heading for lunch at Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ & Taphouse. As evening approaches, you can explore the town’s new shops.

Note: The Trail Ride Road is closed to vehicles for the winter season on the east side of the park at Rainbow Curve and on the west side of the park at Colorado River Trailhead.
